Ronin Wallet - Social Login
Giving web2 gamers a familiar way to get into crypto.

Problem
Billions of dollars in Bitcoin have been lost because users misplace or fail to securely store their seed phrases. While various backup methods are available, they often fall short in ensuring long-term protection, leaving users vulnerable to irreversible asset loss.
Recognizing this gap, we saw this as a massive opportunity to help Ronin gamers onboard to crypto with a familiar method.
Research
Getting individuals to discuss financial matters through Google Meet and Zoom is quite challenging. Who would've thought, right? In the early stages of the project, we interviewed around 10 users, including new users just onboarded to Ronin Network and valuable users (whales), to discuss the issue with seed phrases. Plus we read through 50+ support tickets related to the losing-seed-phrase problem.
Common pain points
- Long onboarding time (> 2 mins)
To guardrail users from making errors when handling their seed phrase, a lot of information is pushed into the onboarding flow, and the backup process is made mandatory for all types of users, lengthening the onboarding process.
- > 80% of users rush to the home screen without reading anything from the onboarding flow
They quickly tap “Next” to get through the seed phrase introduction and the safety instructions, which hinders the backup process. Four interviewees said they simply copied and pasted the phrases into a random note just to get through the flow quickly.
- Approximately 35% of users don’t understand how seed phrases work
When asked, those users assumed it would work like a password and that someone at Sky Mavis could help them recover it, but we can’t.
Solution
The Social Login feature uses cryptographic advancements that allow Ronin Wallet to break down and transform a user’s seed phrase into secret shares and a regular password. With smart secret-sharing, users can now use their social accounts or email to create a new crypto wallet while still remaining fully decentralized.
When users create a new wallet with social accounts or email
- Seed phrase introduction step is removed
- Complicated backup flow is removed
- Also creates a new game Sky Mavis account attached to it
Our principle
Stay non-custodial
From the beginning, we insisted on users being able to use and access their wallet seamlessly in a non-custodial fashion. It turns out that to do so, users still need to keep one extra recovery password. Although it’s easier to memorize than a seed phrase, the concept still feels strange to them.
We took time to refine the flow and listen to user feedback. At the same time, we had many internal discussions with the legal team regarding this matter. In the end, we were able to delay the recovery-password setup until the user has a significant amount of funds. Onboarding time is now less than 1 minute.

Impact
Social login is trusted as the go-to non-custodial wallet creation method for more than 50% of new users.
